A Volunteer’s Typical Day on the Farm
8:45 am: Welcome! Get settled: sign in, fill up your water bottle, use the bathroom, make a name tag, and make sure you’re fully sun-protected.
9 am: Join the rest of the crew under the mulberry tree to go over the morning’s tasks, teams, and safety information.
9:10 am: Set out with your small team up to the fields. Your team will likely consist of Grower staff, other volunteers, an intern, and a team leader. Your team leader will be sure to carefully explain and demonstrate your job.
9:10-10:15 am: Get to work! You might be harvesting different varieties of kale or collard greens, preparing a bed for planting, or weeding in our pick-your-own beds. Our projects change seasonally just like the food we grow!
10:15-10:30: Take a break for some shade and water, and a snack if you need!
10:30-12 pm: Continue working on the same project, or join a new team for another set of tasks to finish up the morning. Your “shift” is complete right at 12 pm.
12 – 1 pm: We have a relaxing lunch outdoors under the big oak tree and volunteers are welcome to join us.
1 – 3 pm: We welcome afternoon volunteers to join our teams for a new set of tasks — often sorting the morning’s harvested veggies. Afternoon projects last until 3 pm, when we wrap up for the day and say goodbye to Growers and volunteers.
