School & Group Volunteering at Red Wiggler Care Farm
We welcome school groups, service providers, and community groups to join us for a day of volunteering.
Volunteers are vital to our work at Red Wiggler. They help cultivate fresh, organic produce while supporting people of all abilities in meaningful farm work.
Volunteering for Students and Groups
Volunteer tasks vary depending on the season, but you might find yourself weeding, planting, harvesting, watering, or preparing soil; or washing, packing, sorting, and weighing produce. Each day brings something new, and we’ll give you all the instructions and demonstrations you need to get started. Plus, we always work as a team, so you’ll never be on your own.
We usually host volunteer groups Tuesday mornings through Friday mornings throughout the growing season (March through November) from 9 a.m. to noon.

A Typical Day at the Farm
What is a typical day of volunteering at Red Wiggler Care Farm?
- We kick off our volunteer day at 8:45 am. When you arrive, take time to sign in, fill up your water bottle, use the bathroom, make a name tag, and make sure you’re ready for the sun.
- At 9 a.m., gather under the mulberry tree to meet the rest of the crew and go over the day’s tasks, teams, and safety guidelines.
- By 9:10 am, you’ll head to the fields with your small team, which may include Grower staff, other volunteers, interns, and a team leader. Your team leader will guide you through the activity, demonstrating how to complete your job.
- From 9:10 to 10:15 am, you’ll get to work! Depending on the season, you might be harvesting kale or collard greens, preparing beds for planting, or weeding in the pick-your-own beds. The tasks vary with the season, just like the crops we grow.
- At 10:15 am, take a quick break for some water, shade, and maybe a snack.
- From 10:30 am to 12 p.m., you’ll continue working on your project or join a new team for another task. Your shift wraps up right at noon.
- At noon, volunteers are invited to join us for a relaxing outdoor lunch under the oak tree.
Questions?
“Students may arrive at Red Wiggler expecting to teach or to offer their skill set, but more often than not, they realize that they themselves have much to learn.”
Suggested Program Fees
*As a non-profit, the suggested program fee helps us cover the administrative and staffing costs of your visit. However, we are committed to ensuring that no group is turned away due to financial limitations. Groups that can pay the full fee—or more—help support those who may not be able to cover the entire amount.
Payments can be made via cash or check on the day of your visit, or online. We appreciate your understanding and support!
