Notes from the Farm

My Red Wiggler Care Farm Experience – Clare Carillo

My name is Clare Carrillo and I have been a staff member at Red Wiggler Care Farm since 2022. I learned about farming through the Arc of Montgomery County Maryland. I was nervous about getting a job at the farm until I volunteered for a week then I got offered the job as a grower. What I enjoyed the most is that the farm is harvesting many different types of veggies such as carrots, potatoes, kohlrabi, turnips, radishes and tomatoes.

During my work experience, I have made friendships with staff and volunteers. My work friends made me feel welcome and happy to be at the farm. I am so excited to continue working at the farm with an awesome team of staff and volunteers.

I was an Education Assistant and now I am a Distribution Assistant at the farm. I support our Harvest Share and CSA programs. CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. The farm donates the produce that we grow to local food banks such as So What Else and Manna Food Bank. The rest of the food produce goes to our CSA customers.  Customers pick up their share of veggies on Wednesday afternoon from 2 to 5 pm and on Saturday Morning from 9 to noon.

The typical workday is to arrive by 9, work until 10:15 or 10:20 and have a short break. Then we continue to work until we have lunch at noon.
