Composting at Red Wiggler

Composting keeps organic waste out of landfills, reduces methane emissions, and returns valuable nutrients to the soil. As a CSA member, you’re invited to participate in our composting program, included as part of your membership. Through our partnership with Compost Crew, your food scraps are turned into nutrient-rich soil instead of heading to a landfill.

How Composting Works at Red Wiggler

1. Pick Up Your Bin

During CSA pickup, grab a clean compost bin (small or large) and a compostable liner.

2. Collect Your Compostables

Place your lined bin in a convenient spot—on the counter (small) or in your garage or patio (large). Add approved materials throughout the week.

3. Drop It Off

At your next CSA pickup, dump your liner and compost into the large green bins near the barn. Use the hose sprayer if your bin needs rinsing.

4. Repeat

Pick up a fresh liner, take your bin home, and compost again next week. You’ll be amazed how much less trash you throw out.

Compostable Materials

Many everyday items like fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, eggshells, and even paper towels are compostable. But there are a few things to avoid, like plastic and glossy or coated paper.

Frequently Asked Questions About Composting

Absolutely. Feel free to use your own container—just grab the right size liner (small or large) from the farm each week.

Weekly is ideal, especially in warmer months. Every other week is fine too—but bringing it more frequently helps reduce odors.

While your food waste waits to be composted, it naturally breaks down—which can cause smells. Here are a few tips:

  • Drop compost off weekly
  • Line the bottom of your bin with newspaper (black ink, non-glossy) or dry leaves
  • Store juicy scraps or coffee grounds in the fridge or freezer and add them just before bringing the bin to drop off

Nope! Compost Crew accepts nearly all carbon-based materials. We encourage you to compost as much as possible to reduce your environmental impact.

Compostable liners are designed to break down, but you can extend their life by:

  • Starting with a clean, dry bin
  • Adding paper towels, kraft paper, or newspaper at the bottom of the liner
  • Reducing liquid-heavy scraps
  • Skipping the liner entirely and rinsing your bin weekly
