This past Wednesday, 27 friends from United Therapeutics came and worked side-by-side with us! They helped plant sweet potatoes; harvest spring onions; install drip tape irrigation; weed our peppers, eggplants, and tomatoes; and more. Thank you, United Therapeutics!

St. Andrew’s Episcopal School Student Volunteers

A small group of student volunteers from St. Andrew’s Episcopal School are spending three weeks at Red Wiggler, and they’ll be here through the end of next week. We love sharing what we do with students and having them work with our team members. Last week the students did a LOT of weeding and learned […]

2022 Alternative Spring Break

We welcomed several Montgomery County Public School high schoolers during the week of April 11, 2022 for Alternative Spring Break! It was a beautiful and busy week, and students assisted with lots of different projects, including planting onions, parsley, broccoli, and swiss chard; preparing beds for more transplanting; and transferring baby tomato, pepper, and eggplant […]

Volunteer Highlight: Steve Charles and the Importance of Our Deer Fence

Our Deer Fence! As a Certified Organic farm, our deer fence is critical to protecting our fields and vegetables from deer and other wild animals including raccoons, fox, and possums. Without the deer fence, our crops would be an open buffet to wildlife, and the deer would cause great destruction and could spread Lyme disease […]

The end goal of the VIT program is to give participants the tools to work successfully as individual volunteers […]

We decided it was a great way to describe our volunteers who join us each week all season long, for multiple seasons. These folks dedicate their time and energy […]

On August 20th, 2018 we invited a group of volunteers to our site at Ovid Hazen Wells Park to glean sweet potato greens. This project was a partnership between Community Food Rescue, University of Maryland Extension, School of Supplementary Nutrition Education, the Montgomery Council Master Gardeners and The Montgomery County Food Council. We welcomed the […]

Volunteer Spotlight: Katie

As someone who has worked in food security for 20 years, Katie Leary Sebastian knows a lot about food and where it comes from. But at Red Wiggler, she’s been learning some new lessons. “I didn’t have a lot of experience working with people with developmental disabilities, and I will admit I was a little […]
