Grower Spotlight – Meet Steve

June 06th, 2013

We have a great group of growers and staff who work each day at the farm, doing all it takes to grow great tasting vegetables, build healthy soil, and share our produce with the community.  This month, we get to know Steve Lashmit, who sat down with Andrea, our farm manager, to share a bit about his time at Red Wiggler.

Steve started working at Red Wiggler in 2009 as in intern through Montgomery County Schools.  He heard about Red Wiggler through his counselor.

Working at Red Wiggler is a great fit for Steve, as he enjoys being outdoors and working outside.  His favorite jobs at the farm include cleaning out the barn and harvesting produce.  Steve enjoys talking to the volunteers at the farm about insects and weed and answering their questions.

In his fifth season, Steve has taken on even more responsibilities at the farm and is developing new skills like hoeing with the hulo hoe and transplanting seedlings in the green house.  This year he grew a special variety of lettuce, Flashy Troutback, that we are excited to harvest this week.

When Steve isn’t working on the farm, he enjoys cooking, gardening, and taking care of animals.  Steve has his own green house at home and grows tomatoes, blueberries and strawberries.   His favorite vegetable is tomatoes.   At lunch, you will find Steve enjoying creative meals he has cooked himself, with Red Wiggler vegetables taking the lead. We certainly enjoy having Steve as a hard working member of our team.
