Environmental Stewardship

The Red Wiggler Community Farm is proud to be a Maryland farm on a Maryland park that works to promote local food production and native species – such as Maryland’s state insect, the Baltimore Checkerspot butterfly, Eastern Bluebirds, native tree and local beneficial macroinvertebrate identification. Our Educational Service Learning Program helps raise awareness of the natural world around us and the connection of Red Wiggler’s organic farm to the wetlands that surround our fields – sustaining a local food source while working on native restoration projects in the park to increase biodiversity.

Our Environmental Stewardship program includes:

  • USDA Certified Organic farming practices that build soil fertility
  • Educational lessons on local foodshed benefits
  • Educational examples of renewable energy practices
    • University of Maryland Solar House
    • Geothermal Multipurpose Farm Building & Greenhouse
  • M-NCPPC partnership with ongoing projects on the Ovid Hazen Wells Park
    • Monthly Weed Warrior park group projects for community members
    • Annual stream monitoring with Montgomery College classes
    • Supervision of Eagle Scout projects, such as installation of bluebird boxes in meadow areas and host plant plantings in the wetlands
